Capitale interior features tall Corinthian columns, a beautify decorated coved ceiling, and art class skylight making Capitale’s Ballroom one of New York’s greatest function locations.
The full impact of the Beaux Arts architecture of Chicago’s Columbian Exposition is evident in this space built in 1893, the year the fair opened. Its limestone interior is enriched with Corinthian pilasters, columns and a pediment bedecked with sculptures by Frederick MacMonnies.
Stanford White
Stanford White, one of Americas most prominent architects, was born in 1853. His creativity, talent and versatile draftsmanship were responsible for the foundation in the 1880’s of one of the country’s most prestigious architectural firms, McKim, Mead and White.
During his prominent career, White was commissioned to design a broad range of private residences and public institutions, some of which are historical landmarks today. From the homes of New York’s exclusive families to one of the couture’s most renowned entertainment arenas, his designs continue to leave many in awe. White’s architectural portfolio includes Washington Square Arch, a Fifth Avenue Mansion formerly owned by the Rockefeller family, the New York Herald building, The Tiffany Building, the Boston Public Library and several branches of the New York Public Library. The Bowery Savings Bank building is now New York’s preeminent event space, CAPITALE.
Located at 130 Bowery , CAPITALE’s 40,0000 square foot space is not only impress but also in structure. This Roman classic 1895 landmark is adorned with corinthian columns, Venetian glass, marble mosaic floors and 65 foot ceilings. CAPITALE is a multilevel, multi room venue equipped to accommodate private parties from 20 to 2000 guests.
White’s decorative style was also seen through his design of jewelry, furniture and interiors.
In 1906, at one of Whites’s most recognized buildings, his life was ended. While attending the opening o Madison Square Garden’s roof show, White was shot and killed by the jealous husband of his mistress.
The popular movie RAGTIME, (the last film with James Cagney) features the life of Stanford White.

NEW YORK (January 2014) – Capitale, the former Bowery Savings Bank and iconic New York City landmark has completed a $1 million restoration of its illustrious neoclassical architecture, upgraded its a state-of-the-art-sound and lighting system, and updated upholstery and décor. Recently honored by BizBash with the coveted “Best Ballroom East Coast” award, Capitale was designed by renowned architect Stanford White in 1895 and features colossal Corinthian columns, Venetian glass, mosaic marble floors, and 65-foot vaulted ceilings, which have been carefully restored in accordance with New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission guidelines.
The iconic venue’s 40,000 square foot space is not only impressive in size, but also in structure and design. Supported by Roman classic architecture, Capitale’s ornate coved ceiling and jewel toned stained-glass skylight have been restored to their original Beaux Arts splendor, creating a one-of-a-kind backdrop for star-studded events, glamorous weddings, and the city’s most elite fundraisers.
In addition to a new state-of-the-art-sound system and T-1 Wireless connection throughout the space, Capitale’s foyer is now equipped with elation Opti Tri Pars LED’s to enhance the former Bowery Savings Bank’s striking Gilded Age entrance. Capitale’s Grand Ballroom has also been upgraded with a state-of-the-art LED Lighting System, which includes a new installment of Elation Professional’s Rayzor Q7s to create dynamic visual effects. With just the touch of a button, lights surrounding the glass skylight dome and along every interior column, alcove, ledge, and walkway light up the room in any color scheme imaginable, instantly transforming the mood and theme.
The building is also now home to a new 200-ton air conditioning unit, an upgrade from the previous 120-ton model. The new unit complies with the coding temperatures regulated by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission.
Under the direction of an elite new management ensemble, Capitale has also received modern-day updates including new beige upholstery in the foyer, an inviting chocolate brown and orange Stark carpet, and the addition of espresso and beige floor-to-ceiling linen drapery.
Capitale’s opulent 15,000 square foot Grand Ballroom, which recently won BizBash’s “Best Ballroom East Coast” award, can accommodate up to 700 guests for a seated dinner or 1,500 guests for a strolling reception. On the historic building’s upper level, two private 2,000 square foot suites provide the perfect space for smaller private events or for pre-nuptial preparations.
